Volunteer Get Togethers and Masterclasses

September-December 2023

Throughout the second half of 2023 we will be offering a number of additional training opportunities for Amma volunteers, staff, and mentors. These trainings will support you in providing the best-informed care to our client group.
The trainings are free for Amma people (some are available to the public for paid tickets) but capacity is limited depending on the content and format of the training. Please use the RSVP form below each event to register.
We are also holding monthly get-togethers for the Volunteers to build and support our community of care. Come along, bring your children!

Amma has a small budget for volunteers who are in the asylum system and do not have access to childcare in order to attend trainings. If this applies to you, please speak to Jenny@ammabirthcompanions.org

1st December 2023 - Supporting Muslim Parents

Time: 10am-4pm (6 hours)
Location:  Amma Family Room (Cadogan Street)
Facilitator: Nicola Goodall (Red Tent Doulas)
open toCompanions, Peer Supporters, Staff, Mentors, external orgs (ticketed)
capacity:  30

Drawing on over 30 years as an educator supporting all sorts of different families and also experience working directly with Muslim parents Nicola Mahdiyyah has much to share. There have been many examples of miscommunication or misunderstanding that could have been avoided with good education around what Muslims may expect during maternity care and some of the cultural and religious traditions they may follow. With so many Muslim women appearing in our MMBRACE report this is crucial work. We now also have the Invisible report focusing solely on Muslim experiences of maternity care in the UK – makes for some shocking reading. We can make our services safer and more accessible with just a little bit of education and understanding.
