As we enter into a brand new year, Team Amma is looking ahead to new plans and challenges, and reflecting on how far we came in 2023. Continue reading below to hear about some of our hopes and intentions for 2024!
Maree Aldam – CEO
What I’m proud of in 2023:
I’m most proud of our team and I feel so INCREDIBLY lucky to work with such an amazing group of people. I’m regularly bowled over by the knowledge, passion, creativity, energy, commitment, kindness (I could go on)!
Favourite moment of the year:
There are so so many! But right up there is us finally getting settled into our new office – especially seeing the mums, babies and kids enjoying our new family room; and seeing our amazing volunteers relaxed and bonding as a group in our new training room.
What I’d like to see in 2024:
I want to see us thrive in the year ahead. These are challenging times – in so many ways – but I’m really excited about the potential we have and I have total faith in us as a team that we’ll take the right steps together to keep making the world a better place for the people we support.

What I’m proud of in 2023:
Training up three beautiful cohorts of volunteers. I’m so proud of all the love and support they’ve gone on to give our wonderful clients.
Favourite moment of the year:
Getting our beautiful training room in the new office!
What I’d like to see in 2024:
The new members of team Amma to find a happy home with us.
Ema Čulík – Communications Officer
What I’m proud of in 2023:
I’m constantly inspired by how the Amma community and our supporters rise up to have honest and powerful conversations about the injustices faced in the birth space and by people in the asylum system. The dialogues we hold lay the foundations for a shift in mindset and ultimately systemic change.
Favourite moment of the year:
The Amma Family Christmas party was so fun, with the food, dancing, people speaking in their own languages about what they’re grateful for, and our fabulous Mama Santa! The occasion just summarised the amazing transformations that take place in our clients as they grow in confidence, strength and power – nourished by their peers and the community. It’s wonderful to see.
What I’d like to see in 2024:
Our Amma way of working is deeply human, respectful, compassionate. I hope we can continue to educate and inspire others to find more compassion and care in everything they do.
Amanda Purdie – Head of Advocacy & Communications
What I’m proud of in 2023:
The creation of our first impact report. We’re a busy team and don’t often get time to pause and reflect, so seeing all of our achievements and progress to date was a fantastic reminder of the difference we’re making with the support of our volunteers, donors, and other partners.
Favourite moment of the year:
Without a doubt, moving into our new office and transforming it from a blank canvas to a home. It felt like a real ‘pinch me’ moment the first time we hosted volunteers in our new training room, and saw mums gathering in the family room. We’ve come along way from working at our founder’s kitchen table not so many years ago!
What I’d like to see in 2024:
Looking forward to sharing our birth outcomes & experiences report, which will strengthen our efforts to advocate for a more equitable maternal care system.

What I’m proud of in 2023:
The amount of support we have been able to give to our wonderful clients, through the amazing volunteers we’ve welcomed on board! It’s amazing to see the team grow and develop, and see the Amma Family do the same.
Favourite moment of the year:
Hard to choose just one! I love it when I have the opportunity to be in the office when the Amma Family group is on – meeting clients I’ve been involved with again!! And seeing the babies growing, it’s really special.
What I’d like to see in 2024:
For Amma to continue to grow and thrive. There are so many important aspects to what we do and offer, and we’re always trying to improve and develo.
