What is the time commitment?
This is a very flexible role. Volunteer drivers join a WhatsApp group where delivery opportunities are posted regularly. If you have time in your schedule, you sign up — there’s no minimum commitment.
Please note: Items located in the office need to be collected during regular office hours.
What are the physical requirements?
Volunteer drivers need to be able to:
- Carry items upstairs – prams, furniture, car seats, and other baby items
- Navigate stairs – some homes are only accessible by stairs
- Work in cramped spaces – some clients live in cramped accommodation (e.g., hotel rooms)
- Set up items – potentially assembling or positioning items like cots in homes
- Manage varied environments – homes can present sensory challenges including noise, odours, visual stimuli, and variable lighting and room temperature
What training is required?
We keep training simple and accessible:
- One day of in-person training (approximately 4 hours)
- Training offered every few months for new volunteers
What you’ll learn:
- Introduction to trauma-informed care
- Boundaries and confidentiality
- The experiences of our client group
- Safeguarding, allyship, and privilege
Our training promotes discussion and connection, leaving volunteers feeling supported and excited to start.
Will this cost me money?
No. We never want our volunteers to be out of pocket!
When you’re volunteering with us, Amma covers:
- Petrol costs in full
- Parking costs in full
- Any small admin fees if your car insurer charges for updating your policy
About car insurance: It’s important to let your car insurer know you’re using your vehicle as a volunteer. Usually this is a quick phone call with no cost attached, but if you incur any small admin fee, Amma will cover it.
How accessible is the role?
We’re committed to supporting volunteers with disabilities. Our team offers personalised assistance, and our training accommodates different learning needs.
Given the physical requirements of carrying items upstairs and into homes, we recommend contacting our Volunteer Manager, Jenny Block (jenny@ammabirthcompanions.org), before applying to discuss your specific access needs and how these might be accommodated.
How will you support me?
You’ll be part of a supportive team:
- Work with Amma staff guidance — you’re never without backup
- Staff support on maintaining boundaries
- Regular opportunities to connect with other Amma volunteers
- A dedicated volunteer manager
